Polk County Mental Health and

Substance Abuse Initiative

Background:

As a response to the Western North Carolina Symposium on Mental Health and Substance Abuse held in Asheville, NC on April 3, 2006, a group of Polk County citizens began to meet to see what could be done locally to address needs and gaps in Mental Health and Substance Abuse services.  An Ad Hoc committee grew into the Polk County Initiative.

Structure:

Addiction Recovery Institute acts as facilitator for this local effort.  They are supported financially by a grant from the Polk County Mental Health Advisory Board.  The Initiative meets monthly (1st Wednesday --8:30am, County Health Department)  Several committees are actively working on issues of importance to the community.
