A Sampling of Media and Other Responses to Reform
The Mental Health Reform process has created a lot of uncertainty as to which services are available, who will approve them, who will provide them, who can receive them, who will pay for them etc…Uncertainity has produced misunderstanding and fear.
Media all across the state have produced stories trying to put a “face” on reform. Some newspapers have written so extensively that they deserve to be recognized and commended and their articles need to be read and re-read to get a more full appreciation of the complexity of the issues involving reform.
Two such sources here in western North Carolina are the Asheville Citizen-Times (www.citizen-times.com) and the Hendersonville Times-News (www.hendersonvillenews.com). Both papers have targeted Mental Health Reform as a key topic, both in their news coverage and on their editorial pages.
A compilation of stories about Mental Health Reform written by the Times-News can be found on the left side of the main page, in the green section, titled “Mental Health: A Question of Care.”
